Berea-Midpark Middle School ribbon cutting marks school’s evolution

Berea City School District officially celebrated the newly reconfigured and renamed Berea-Midpark Middle School. Board members, city officials, community members, parents, and school staff attended a ribbon cutting ceremony Tuesday, September 11 to mark the occasion.

“Their commitment to our students and their commitment to our school district goes way above and beyond what I could ever describe,” said Superintendent Mike Sheppard while thanking Berea Board of Education members. “They put a lot of time into what they do as school board members and they all are here for the right reasons. They are here first and foremost for our students. They work really hard with us as a team so we can provide incredible facilities like this and wonderful opportunities across the school district.”

Previously a grades 7-9 junior high, the school reconfigured to a 5-8 middle school model. Bond issue funds of $12.5 million were allocated for upgrades and renovations throughout the new 5-8 campus. These include a connector built between two existing school buildings, new classrooms, HVAC throughout, a new bus loop and parking improvements.

Grades 5 and 6 formerly were housed at the now demolished Ford Intermediate School. That school’s site is the future home of a new elementary school in Brook Park. The auditorium has been retained to incorporate as part of the new school. Grade 9 is once again at the high school

“Without the community’s support of a significant bond issue and investment into our school district facilities, none of this would have been possible and none of the additional ongoing construction projects would be possible. We really thank our community,” said Sheppard.

During winter break, the MHJH cafeteria was updated with new furniture for our students! The modern arrangement includes high tables, high stools, lounge chairs, and booths—all in the BCSD Titan colors of orange and blue! When the kids came back to school on January 3rd, they were quite surprised and happy with the discovery of their updated cafeteria! The kids already seem to enjoy this new arrangement and modern look! See the changes by viewing the video and photos below!

The site of the connector building between the existing Junior High and Middlebrook Educational Center has been cleared, followed by the preparation of the building pad. Currently, foundations are being poured and are approximately 25% complete.

The Middlebrook Educational Center interior is undergoing a renovation with walls, ceilings, floors, utilities, painting, etc. and undergoing demolition and beginning of new work.

Since the Junior High is currently occupied with students, work has been contained to sitework, roof work, and 2nd shift piping installation in the corridors. Coming this December, the first section of classrooms will be renovated to receive new windows and air conditioning/heating units.

A look at the construction occurring can be viewed in the video below.

Access to MHJH from the rear of the building off of Middlebrook Boulevard will close starting Monday, October 9, 2017. The rear circle drop off will no longer be available. This is due to the renovation that will taking place at the Middlebrook Education Center. Parents will need to utilize the remaining two drop-off/pick-up points: the MHJH main parking lot and Sandlehaven Drive sidewalk. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact MHJH directly.

Throughout the next few years, it is important that the community is well informed about what is happening in regards to our district facilities projects.

    • We have established our district design planning committees for both our elementary and high school. These groups met for the first time on February 2, 2017 (Elementary Planning Team) and on February 6, 2017 (High School Planning Team). These groups will be meeting several times over the next few months.

    • We have also established a committee to study and plan the 5-8 middle level complex. This group will meet for the first time on February 8, 2017.

    • Recently, district administrators traveled to meet with multiple insurance companies and bond rating companies to establish our ratings. The District's bond rating has a significant impact on our interest rate and increases potential investors.

Moody's Investors Service has upgraded to A1 from A2 Berea City School District, OH's General Obligation Unlimited Tax (GOULT) and General Obligation Limited Tax (GOLT) debt, and its certificates of participation (COPs) to A2. Concurrently, Moody's has assigned an A1 to the district's Series 2017 bonds. Post-sale, the district will have $143 million of rated debt.

The upgrade to A1 reflects the district's recent trend of operating surpluses and significant improvement in cash reserves. Additionally incorporated is the district's sizeable tax base, average socioeconomic characteristics and above average debt burden with elevated unfunded pension liabilities. The district's GOLT is also rated A1 given the presence of a full faith and credit pledge and because debt service is a first budget obligation under Ohio's ten mill limitation.

The A2 COPs rating reflects appropriation risk and the essentiality of the leased asset (an elementary school).

    Read the full Moody's report
