School Bus Safety
The safety of our students is our highest priority. Families play an important role in helping students develop safe habits while traveling to and from school. Please review the following school bus safety information with your child.
Walking to the Bus Stop
Students should:
- Walk on the sidewalk whenever possible.
- Stay off lawns and private property.
- If no sidewalk is available, walk close to the curb on the right side of the road.
- Go directly to and from the bus stop without unnecessary stops.
- Never talk to or accept rides from strangers.
- Wear bright or reflective clothing during dark morning or afternoon hours.
Bus Stop Expectations
- Bus stops may be located up to one-half mile from a student's residence.
- Students should arrive at the bus stop at least five minutes before the scheduled pickup time.
- Bus stops are selected based on safety considerations, including visibility, traffic patterns, road conditions, and weather-related concerns.
- Students must wait at their assigned bus stop.
- Students should never cross behind a school bus.
Safe Boarding Procedures
When the bus arrives:
- Wait until the bus comes to a complete stop.
- Board only when directed by the driver.
- Use the handrail when entering the bus.
- Proceed directly to a seat and remain seated while the bus is in motion.
Safe Drop-Off Procedures
When exiting the bus:
- Use the handrail while getting off.
- Move immediately to a safe location at least 10 giant steps away from the bus.
- Remain there until the bus has departed.
- If the driver sounds the horn, students should stop immediately and look for potential danger.
Crossing the Street
If students must cross the street:
- Cross only in front of the bus.
- Walk at least 10 feet in front of the bus before crossing.
- Wait for the driver's signal before crossing.
- Look left, right, and left again before entering the roadway.
Understanding the Danger Zone
The "Danger Zone" is the area approximately 10 feet around the school bus where the driver may have limited visibility.
Students should:
- Stay out of the Danger Zone whenever possible.
- Never walk behind the bus.
- Tell the driver if they drop an item near the bus before attempting to retrieve it.
Railroad Crossing Safety
When approaching railroad tracks:
- Remain seated.
- Stay quiet and listen for driver instructions.
- Continue to remain quiet until the bus has completely crossed the tracks.
Emergency Procedures
Bus Evacuation Drills
Each school year, students participate in emergency evacuation drills to learn how to safely exit the bus using both front and rear emergency exits. Students should follow all driver instructions and evacuate quickly and calmly when directed.
In the Event of an Emergency
School bus drivers receive training to respond to emergencies such as:
- Traffic accidents
- Mechanical breakdowns
- Severe weather situations
- Security threats or hostile intruder situations
If an emergency occurs, students should remain calm and carefully follow the driver's instructions.
