Berea-Midpark Music Selections- Please read carefully!
Below is a description for each class that is offered.
Every 5th grade student must take music. We offer 4 different classes for students to choose from. 5th grade is the ONLY time students can start an instrument with all the basic instruction including proper assembly, playing, and tone production. Students must choose 1 music class. All classes are offered during the school day and are a graded class.
*Student special areas schedules are built off their music selection. Changing instruments or classes after school starts will alter their schedule.
Band: This is a performance based class. Classes are divided into woodwind/percussion and brass. Students are responsible for renting or purchasing an instrument. Percussion and Trombone students may use a school instrument during class and keep their instrument at home for practice. Families who are having difficulty obtaining an instrument should contact the band teachers for assistance. The band will perform 2 concerts (January & May).
Strings: This is a performance based class. Classes are typically divided into these instruments, violin and viola/cello/bass. Students are responsible for renting or purchasing an instrument. Students who choose to play cello or bass may use a school instrument during class and keep their instrument at home for practice. Families who are having difficulty obtaining an instrument should contact the string teachers for assistance. The strings will perform 2 concerts (January & May).
Choir: Choir is a performance based class. This means the majority of grades come from performing skills learned in class. There are three concerts throughout the school year in which the students showcase their progress. In class, singers will learn how to read music, practice proper vocal technique, and learn how to sing in a group.
General Music: General music is a class for students who are not interested in performing in an ensemble. This class includes more paper/pencil style music learning and lower stress performance. Students in this course will focus on the basics of music; music theory, music history, and music reading. Students will learn how to use their singing voices and play classroom instruments to read and write music in class with their peers.
Current 4th graders are asked to complete this form by May 22
