All Berea City Schools Now Proud Recipients of the Purple Star Designation

April 12, 2024, Berea, Ohio — The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce has announced a significant achievement for Berea City Schools. Berea-Midpark High School, Berea-Midpark Middle School, and Brook Park Elementary School have each been awarded the prestigious Purple Star designation. With this latest announcement, all five schools within the district, including Big Creek Elementary and Grindstone Elementary Schools, have now received this recognition.

This honor demonstrates Berea City Schools' district-wide commitment to supporting military-connected students and families. These accolades are part of the "Future Forward Ohio" initiative, which emphasizes the importance of overcoming educational obstacles and catering to the unique wellness and academic needs of military-connected youth during transitions between school settings.

The Purple Star Advisory Board, established by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce, sets specific criteria to recognize schools that demonstrate exceptional commitment to military families. Each designation is valid for three years, encouraging schools to maintain and renew their commitment.

Thank you to our staff and community who have contributed to achieving this milestone. We look forward to continuing to support military families and enhancing educational outcomes for all students.

Military Families

The Berea City School District values the many families that live in our community with ties to the military. We want every military family to know that we are here to support them, encourage them, and give them the resources they need for success.

Please do not hesitate to contact your school counselor or administrator for additional support and assistance. Our staff can assist with any transition or support needs during enrollment, parental leave and/or academic questions. Our staff can also work with counselors to help facilitate necessary conversations with any staff members.

The Berea City School District acknowledges and celebrates our military families and military history throughout the community and involves Veterans in our schools in several ways, including:

  • Veterans Day events, lessons, and activities held throughout the district
  • Veterans who are related to a student in our schools are invited to attend recognition programs and concerts
  • Veterans serve as crossing guards
  • Educational flag program for students by Veterans
  • Recognition of current staff Veterans

The district has also established a Veterans Outreach Committee that is currently working on creating opportunities for Veterans and our military families. Future opportunities currently being planned:

  • Veterans Appreciation Night at sporting events
  • Displays and recognition of alumni Veterans
  • Volunteer opportunities for Veterans to work directly with students
  • Family networking group for current and previously deployed military families in our schools
